Will the Church always be behind the technological curve? Some Christians and plenty of non-Christians seem to think so. Maybe it goes back to the Church’s reaction to Copernicus’ sun-centered solar system. Maybe the Scopes Monkey Trial. Whatever the case, the reputation persists. Anytime the Sunday morning worship slides hit a snag, many see it as one more piece of evidence. Meanwhile, SpaceX seamlessly launched a couple more satellites into orbit over the weekend.
Plenty of churches are behind the times. Some see it as a ding on Christianity’s credibility score. If churches can’t figure out how to manage their social media presence, should we really trust them to shepherd our souls?
The relationship between Christianity and technology has been complicated, a “situationship.” At best, Christianity has consistently been uneasy about technology. Broadcast media gave us people like Billy Graham and also Pat Robertson. The blogosphere gave us the emerging church, social media gave us religious deconstruction, and the App Store gave us YouVersion.
